AccountantChange November 2023 Hackathon

In today’s world, competition for jobs is fierce. Certain professions require specific skills, and the theoretical knowledge acquired in universities is often not enough. As an industry, the accounting profession is known to be specialized. But the truth is, there are not as much practical training opportunities for students as is required, so many young professionals starting out in the industry find the going tougher than is necessary.
Being in the market for 15 years, Tailored Accounts recognizes this need, and bridges this gap with its quarterly AccountantChange program. This November, AccountantChange organized a Hackathon, a unique way to integrate the practical and theoretical sides of accounting. All participants were required to pitch an idea to solve the fundamental problem of the double entry system. We all know the double entry system is integral to the accounting system – but is there a better way to address some of its more trickier challenges, such as its complexity for instance? Students and young professionals participating in the Hackathon were required to come up with a solution, meeting three goals all at once – working as a team, developing their critical thinking skills and improving their communication skills with a presentation. As a bonus, the team with the best pitch were also awarded a prize. Through the Hackathon, Tailored Accounts encouraged each of the participants to expand their knowledge, thinking through the basic accounting problem with a little bit of creativity and developing valuable workplace skills.
Three teams in total participated, made up of nine students and young professionals, and were judged by Harry Hoang, the founder and CEO of Tailored Accounts, and Fuzuki Nishimura, TA’s Chief Technical Officer. Both of them have been in the industry for nearly two decades. Each group received detailed feedback on their performance as the program moved towards its close. The goal was to establish an extraordinary learning experience, ensuring that every participant gains valuable insights while also thoroughly enjoying the journey.
